Party Monster

Party Monster
Party Monster (2003)

IMDB rating: 5.90

Plot: Set in the New York club scene of the late 1980’s thru the 1990’s, a tale which chronicles the rise and fall of club-kid promoter ‘Michael Alig’ (qv), a party organizer, whose extravagant life was sent spiralling downward when he boasted on television that he had killed his friend, roommate, and drug dealer, Angel Melendez. Originally from Indiana, Alig moved to New York, and came to be an underground legend, known for his excessive drug use and outrageous behavior in the club world. At his peak, he had his own record label, and magazine, and hosted Disco 2000, one of the biggest club nights in New York in the ’90s. He was doing a lot of drugs, and as his addiction got worse, his party themes became darker and more twisted. Alig’s saga reached its tragic crescendo when he viciously murdered his drug dealer, Angel, by injecting him with Drano and throwing him in the East River. The power he wielded on the club scene made him feel untouchable, so he didn’t hestitate to boast of the murder. The press thought it was a publicity stunt—until Angel’s body washed ashore.

Which film portrayals of the Nazis are accurate, and which ones are exaggerated?
Many films regarding the Nazis regard them as inhumane monsters without a shred of conscience or emotion. However, the Milgram experiments show that normal people that are pulled off the street are able to commit atrocities just because they were following orders.

Also, some Nazis do not fit the category of war-like and antisemitic. Two prime examples are Oskar Schindler and Claus von Stauffenberg. Plus, many of the men in the military were drafted, and being a part of the Nazi Party was required by law. Some of them were sadistic, but that doesn’t mean that all of them were. Many of them were just young men trying to survive.

There are films like Downfall which portray the Nazis as human beings while being anti-Nazi at the same time, but most films exaggerate the Nazis. I’m not saying that Hitler was not evil; I’m simply trying to seperate fact from fiction.

Almost all are exaggerated. WWII was a time of propaganda
Antonious | Feb 07, 2010

When a film is made it is fiction unless it is specifically called a film of events as they really happen much like combat footage used in war movies. One can not make a film about real events unless it is made of the real event. Its much like a photo. A photo is a representation of a moment in time. It will never happen again exactly as it occurred because one can not go back in time - it is scientifically impossible to go back to an exact event. Well, films about real events have to be taken with a grain of salt.
tuffy | Feb 07, 2010

In Germany during the Nazi era it was much safer to be a member of the Nazi Party and undermine the system from within than to try and openly fight them.
Just because someone was a member of the party doesn’t necessarily mean they were inhuman monsters like Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, Josef Mengele, Adolf Eichmann etc.
There were many people who used their membership of the party to help people rather than destroy them, for example Oskar Schindler.

Unfortunately, Hollywood has never allowed the truth to get in the way of a good story.
Elizabeth | Feb 07, 2010

With very few exceptions the Nazis have turned out to be the perfect villains for Hollywood. Hollywood is ALWAYS fiction, always! Even if it claims to be a documentary, or (heaven forbid) a reality show, it was edited by someone with a viewpoint - it will always reflect that viewpoint.

I once read a description of the Klingons on the original Star Trek - "They were the perfect villains, they were pure evil, they were so nasty they built their spaceships without bathrooms to make themselves nastier. They were so evil they would fart in airlocks."

The Klingons are the Nazis of the future. Hollywood is always looking for identifiable bad guys - zombies are the current trend.
gaylene B | Feb 07, 2010

All the ones made by jews are inaccurate.
Adolf Hitler | Feb 07, 2010

Beware of confusing ‘Nazi’ with ‘German’ and assuming all Germans were Nazis from 1933 - 1945; this is an oversimplification, and just not true. Stauffenberg, for example, was no Nazi and never a Party member.

Nazi Party membership never exceeded 10% of the population (the Party target) and the vast majority of the armed forces, particularly the senior officer corps (which were mostly members of the aristocracy), were not Nazi Party members. It was NOT required to be a Party member by law if your were in the military; the requirement was for all members of the military to take an oath of personal loyalty and obedience to Hitler.

Political leadership and administrators at all levels, and SS members would all have belonged to the Party, so can be described as Nazis.

To answer your question:

Valkyrie
Kelly’s Heroes
A Bridge Too Far
Schindler’s List

I believe portray Nazi Party members/personnel accurately

Most 1960s and earlier movies - for example Battle of the Bulge, The Dirty Dozen and so on grossly exaggerate, stereotyping all Germans as Nazis, and stereotyping Nazis also.

After all, as you point out, Schindler was a Nazi Party member, and clearly wasn’t some evil barbaric goose stepping monster.

But when he realizes that these recent slaying is the work of a man he trained, he feels obligated to stop him. Furious as he is with his former mentor for ignoring his pleas for help, Aaron knows that he and L.T. share a tragic bond that is unbreakable. And, even as they go into their final combat against each other, neither can say with certainty who is the hunted and who is the hunter.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

The Far Side of the World
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

IMDB rating: 7.50

Plot: During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, HMS Surprise, and a much larger French warship, the Acheron, with greater fire power, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Russell Crowe brings great intensity to the role of Captain Jack Aubrey. Lucky Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. While the naval battle sequences are quite fantastic, the film is successful because director Weir chose to build the story to get to know the men who are locked aboard the tight quarters of a small ship and how they interact everyday. The officers and the mates are well-known by the time the final battle comes. Paul Bettany offers a strong performance as the surgeon and naturalist who balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain’s friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together. The horrors of the injuries from the war are frequently implied, but vividly depicted in the reactions of the characters.

(fans only)If there was a sequel to Breaking Dawn…. ?
Would you read it???? By another author , that continued with the love of Renesmee and Jacob, and all the characters’ personalities were the same except more developed, would you read it? if not why not? because i think there is,called darkness falls……. a whole new saga, by some miguel ortiz guy??? let me know! and sign his petition if u agree!!! here is a sample of the book(im sure all the loose ends will be tightened when the book is published, if it is……. what do u guys think!?!?!????

Darkness Falls, BOOK ONE: RENESMEE, Chapter 6: The hunt

I listened closely to water flowing over rocks, producing splashes that were hardly noticible, as we hurried to the river. The grass and dirt gave off a more intense wet smell as we drew closer. I spotted the river half a mile away. Jacob’s speed increased, I followed his lead. The river flowed south smoothly.
In front of me, Jake launched himself forward with the strength of his hind legs, stretching his body over the beautiful river. Then landed on the opposite side of the river on his front paws. He turned and waited for me.
It was my turn to face the river. Six feet before the edge of the river, i leapedforward, head first. As my body moved higher, being carried by the wind, I looked forward and caught sight of my potential prey. A light brown helpless deer. I lost sight of it, as my body lowered towards the ground. I stored the coordinates of my prey in my mind, then landed lightly in front of Jacob.
"Come! I saw one. On the other side of those trees." I said as I pointed in the direction of the ignorant deer.
Jacob nodded his head, and motioned me to proceed before him. I did.
What seemed to be a hedge of trees, was the only thing that seperated me from my prey. I quietly stalked towards the edge of the wall of trees, stepping on rocks. I tried to avoid stepping on dry leaves that might crackle and scare away my prey. It shocked me to belive there was anything dry in this damp place.
I reached the edge of the trees and stuck my head out to monitor my prey. As soon as my eyes set on the deer, it’s fragrance reached me, and filled my lungs. My ears surpassed the beating of Jacob’s heart and focused on the pumping blood that circled throughout the body of my prey.
Without taking my eyes off the prize, I motioned Jake to follow with my right hand. I heard him follow behind me as I took a quiet step forward. I observed the deer, it continued to lean it’s head towards the ground and feast on the moist grass. The deers left side faced me; I took another step towards it, The sweet scent of the blood, made my mouth water. The sound of the blood pumping, stimulated my senses. I wanted it. No, I needed it.
I launched myself towards the deer, but flew high above it. The deer turned to the right, then to the left to see what produced the change in the wind. When it’s gaze turned left, it’s eyes encountered Jacob, charging forward towards him. The deer immdiatly turned back left and began to run. Jacob let out a low howl.
My feet pressed tightly against the side of the deer, knocking it off it’s weak, uncoordinated feet. As my prey struck the ground, it let out a high pitched yelp, in pain.
Jacob stood back, and watched me. I lifeted the vile animal’s head upward, and sank my razor sharp teeth into it’s throat, wherethe pumping of blood was the strongest. I drained the warm blood from the animal to soothe my throat. The deers legs figgeted, reacting to the loss of blood.
The blood was sweet, warm, and ablove all satisfying. I felt my strength being renewed. My senses being sharpened. The soft burning in my throat being cooled.
The blood was quickly running out. I drank the last reminance of the animal, and stood up. I felt light headed as the blood settled in my system, but that was normal. I wiped my mouth with my arm, letting deep red blood drops, roll off my skin. I looked down at my once beautiful sundress, and observed the tears and mud stains. I smiled, that meant my hunting trip was successful.
Jacob stepped up to the deer, and dug his face into the ribcage. I heard the cracking of the bones as Jacob seperated the meat from the bones, with his paws. He sank his teeth in, ripping the skin off our dinner, only lifting his head to take in huge amounts of air. His breathing intensified as he continued to feast. Jake stood as tall as me, even as a wolf, on all four legs.
As he finished devouring the once healthy, living deer; leaving a pile of dried bones and a skull.
Jacob turned his back to the pile, to face me. I scratched the fur on his back.
"Let’s go home" I suggested.
He shook his head, and took off running towards La Push. I followed after him.

No I probably wouldn’t. Only the author who created the characters know them intimatley, someone else writing them is just guess work and many times they get the essence of a character very very wrong. Their choices are very out of character. I’ve read several stories that our continuations by a different author and most of them aren’t even that great writers nevermind capturing who these characters are. There are some that are good but most aren’t. And while the Twilight series is entertaining it’s not that great of a piece of literature in the first place.

EDIT: And yes, you are right. Midnight Sun is NOT a continuation of the Twilight series, it’s NOT a ‘5th book’ it’s Twilight re-written in Edwards POV.

2. i probably would not read this other guys books. although i LOVED the Twilight books, i liked the way they ended as sad i was that they did. they cannot go on forever.
that is why i like Edwards sequal, it is the same story, just from edwards perspective.
*RockingTheWorldForever* | Jan 26, 2009

no it would be diffucult to read from another author because they dont see inside everyones heads like stephenie knows how everyone would feel about something. its cool to write fanfictions though its fun. o and dont get too obsesed with twilight. been there done that. there are some pretty good books out there besides twilight
Bella C | Jan 26, 2009

i would read it but it isn’t his so he doesn’t have the right to write it. and midnight sun is the 5th book and it is twilight but from edwards point of view.
soccer chick | Jan 26, 2009

Daddy Day Care

Daddy Day Care
Daddy Day Care (2003)

IMDB rating: 5.60

Plot: In the hilarious comedy Daddy Day Care, two fathers (Eddie Murphy, Jeff Garlin) lose their jobs in product development at a large food company and are forced to take their sons out of the exclusive Chapman Academy and become stay-at-home fathers. With no job possibilities on the horizon, the two dads open their own day care facility, “Daddy Day Care”, and employ some fairly unconventional and sidesplitting methods of caring for children. As “Daddy Day Care” starts to catch on, it launches them into a highly comedic rivalry with Chapman Academy’s tough-as-nails director (Anjelica Huston) …who has driven all previous competitors out of business.

Directors: Carr Steve

Actors: Murphy Eddie,Jeff Garlin,Zahn Steve,Nealon Kevin,Katz Jonathan,Griffin Khamani,Burkholder Max,Young Arthur,Comedy,Family,

Is it true that in modern day America, liberty consists of?
the grip that both the welfare state and warfare state have on the lives and fortunes of the American people? Both conservatives and liberals look to the federal government to be their daddy or, even worse, their god. They have assigned their federal daddy-god the task of taking care of their retirement, healthcare, education, employment, and business as well as protecting them from the terrorists, drug dealers, immigrants, communists, and other scary people.
Eustachy,

Somalia is basicly anarchy. Libertarianism is not anarchy. It can’t be compared to Somalia. It’s a fallacy. Even in the most extreme form of libertarianism, anarcho-capitalism, there are courts and police to protect person and property rights.

"Daddy-god"? Really? I was going to take this question seriously until you started on with that. Good luck getting decent responses with verbiage like that.
whiteflame55 | Dec 28, 2009

I’d say that the above statement applies to the liberal ideology and is the antithesis of the conservative one.
Corrine | Dec 28, 2009

Liberty consists of anything that not against the law (liberty being "freedom to choose to do something")
… | Dec 28, 2009

I guess you must think Somalians are the freest people in the world
Eustachy | Dec 28, 2009

Yes but really the government convinces us we need it to do those things to keep feeding the corporatist machine.
House of Tyranny | Dec 28, 2009

Yeah. You’re right. Damn "THE MAN." Down with the establishment. Sign, sign, everywhere a sign, fvcking up the scenery, breakin’ my mind, hell no, we won’t go, hell no, we won’t go… ah, ya don’t believe, we’re on the eve of destruction…

The ’60s are over, man, and they ain’t coming back. Get some new material, why don’t you?
El Tecolote | Dec 28, 2009

You are incorrect.

Conservatives I know believe in limited federal government as our country was founded. Just because some republican politicians went astray and we were too complacent to stand up to them does not mean we agree. The Tea Parties are about this tyrannical government.

The liberals I cannot speak for, but they keep electing these despots, so I find it hard to disagree with that.

When will people wake up and see what Obama is doing to this country?
Obama and his new black panther party is moving this country toward socialism at an alarming pace.
He chooses to investigate those who protect us, like the CIA, but protect those who threaten us like the terrorists and black panthers.
He has surrounded himself with czars who are America hating, racists, communists and just plain far left wing nut jobs.
He wants to create a civilian security force that will be as well trained and armed as our military. Why?
Obama has quadrupled our deficit in the first 7 months of his presidency.
The dollar gets weaker and weaker as they print money 24/7.
Unemployment at 9.7%, although he promised it would not go above 8% when he got his stimulus passed. (By the way, his former employer, ACORN, got $5.2 billion out of the stimulus).
His union thugs and ACORN seek to silence us through violence and threats.
He recenty signed an order that will bring Hamas associated Palestinians to the US.
He wants to release terrorists from GITMO into the US.
He wants a health care plan that eliminates private insurance thus leaving the Government in control of your life from cradle to grave.
He wants to pass cap and trade which will burden the American tax payer with billions of new taxes.
Meanwhile, facilitating the largest transfer of wealth in the history of mankind to the Chinese.
He wants a "cyber security" bill passed that will basically give him control of the internet in the US.
He has a total disregard for the Constitution and has called it a hindrance.
With all of ths said, consider this scenario:
The dollar tanks, the socialist Democrats in Washington control energy, health care, banks, insurance companies, auto manufacturing. They shut down all voices of dissent. Obama sends in his goons to terrorize the growing tea party movement and creates anarchy. He then will have his chaos to declare martial law, shut down the internet, other forms of communication, etc. Americans would be without food, water, electricity, etc and would be at the mercy of the government.
It may sound a little far fetched but can you see this is a possibility? When will the American people stand up and say this is enough? When we take back our country? What do you think is the best way to accomplish this task before it is too late?

It takes a lot to wake a well trained warrior up. He canno’t be pushed
unwillingly into a fight. However when the final straw has been placed
on his back. The reaction is quick, sudden, and the perpatrator is
done with in a instant. Obama has just layed the last straw on the
warriors load. 2010 will be the dem’s downfall. They will lose siginificant ground in both houses of the Congress. Pelosi will be
voted out and not returned. Reid will not be returning. Obama will
be on an Island by himself. And the waves will erode his position
daily. He will be a lost soul wondering the hallways of a very big
house.

People will only acknowledge his exsistence out of respect for the
office, not out of respect for him. He will be nothing more than a
fly on the ass of life. Until he is voted away for good.

what really scares me is the thought of people with your mind set ever running this country. a message to the democrats: forget the republicans. they aren’t worthy of a serious debate. i say just smile at them and nod.

Never. The die hard Dems close their eyes and ears and that’s the end of it. They just won’t admit they made a mistake.

Paul Grass | Sep 05, 2009

When will sheeple wake up and see what obama, bush, clinton, bush, reagan etc and all dems and reps have done to America since they re-distributed the wealth back to the wealthy since the 50’s and diluted our labor pool with cheap ILLEGAL foreign workers, while shipping the good jobs overseas. Wake up sheeple it isn’t a dem or rep thing, it’s all of them. They have all sold us out to line their own pockets.
william k | Sep 05, 2009

America belongs to democrats too and I am seeing more and more evidence that even they are beginning to recognize that he who they elected is not one of them. That allows a measure of hope. It’s a mistake they need to correct.

Heres the way I see it and Yes I voted for Obama but in past 8 months he has gradulally changed my opinion of his policies.

Socialist behavior or even ideas are not all bad but when you allow Race, Religion, and Activist Anarchy too a Socialist plan then it becomes about Impowering a certan Group of Individuals too control others that do not agree with there ideas or plans! Obamas actions and behaviors and his Personality all have this Socialist Unbrella but it covers his Racist, Activist, and some Religous beliefs toward America and its people! This is a First President wherehe has impowered CZAR’s too control and over see vidal Instatutions/Companies and Banks! Why? Do we need that many for all these companies! What he is doing is side stepping Congress Approval and simply useing his Power too others that he has known for years or they have very Similiar beliefs in the way they see or want America to be!
